The Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles form the busiest port complex in the United States and one of the most important trade gateways in the world. Located side-by-side in Southern California, these twin ports handle roughly one-third of all U.S. containerized imports. The

Port of Long Beach, opened in 1911, spans over 3,200 acres and is known for its forward-thinking environmental initiatives, including its Green Port Policy and investments in zero-emission technologies. Meanwhile, the Port of Los Angeles—dubbed "America’s Port®"—is the nation’s largest by volume, operating across 7,500 acres and 43 miles of waterfront. Both ports are not only economic engines, generating millions of jobs nationwide, but also pioneers in clean shipping practices. Together, they play a critical role in global trade, environmental innovation, and local community engagement, solidifying their position as essential pillars of the U.S. economy.

A TWIC® card, or Transportation Worker Identification Credential, is a security clearance issued by the TSA that allows workers to access secure areas of ports, vessels, and other maritime facilities regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard. It's a required credential for anyone who needs unescorted access to restricted port areas—including truck drivers, longshoremen, mechanics, and terminal employees. Without a TWIC card, individuals cannot legally perform work inside most parts of the Port of Long Beach or the Port of Los Angeles. To obtain one, applicants must pass a federal background check and be fingerprinted, ensuring they pose no security risk to the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

PRE-ENROLL ONLINE

Complete the online application via the official TSA enrollment portal (“Start TWIC® Enrollment” button). You’ll provide personal info (name, address, SSN), your occupation (e.g. “Merchant Mariner” or “Truck Driver”), and select your application center near your home.

SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT

After pre‑enrolling, book an in‑person appointment (or drop in) at a designated TWIC enrollment center. Walk‑ins are accepted but appointments are prioritized.

GATHER AND BRING DOCUMENTS

Prepare acceptable ID documents:

  • One from List A, such as a valid U.S. passport or Permanent Resident Card

  • Or two from List B, including a photo ID (e.g. state driver’s license + birth certificate)

VISIT AN ENROLLMENT CENTER

At your appointment:

  • Present IDs

  • Be fingerprinted

  • Get a facial photo taken

  • Complete a background-check form

  • Pay the non-refundable fee (typically $124; reduced to $93 if you have HME (hazmat) or FAST)

TSA CLEARANCE

TSA and FBI conduct background checks to verify you don’t pose a security risk. Processing typically takes 30–45 days; TSA recommends applying at least 60 days before you need the card.

CARD ISSUANCE OR PICK UP

Once cleared, your TWIC card is either mailed to you or available for pickup at the enrollment center.

USE AND RENEW

  • Holds up to 5 years before renewal is required.

  • Renewal through the same steps, preferably online first (fee may be slightly lower).

  • Keep it accessible for port access—as it’s legally required for unescorted entry into secure port areas like Long Beach or Los Angeles.
