Lost Your Job? You May Qualify for Free CDL Training in California

3 min read

Losing your job doesn't have to mean putting your future on hold. It could be the beginning of a new career.

If you've recently been laid off, experienced a company closure, or lost your job because your employer reduced its workforce, you may qualify for government-funded Commercial Driver's License (CDL) training.

At TGA Truck Driving School, we help individuals explore opportunities to enter the trucking industry and begin a new career. With training locations in Downey, Torrance, and Lancaster, California, we're committed to helping eligible students take the next step toward employment. You can begin the eligibility process here: Start Application

What Is a Dislocated Worker?

You may have heard the term Dislocated Worker without knowing what it means.

Simply put, a Dislocated Worker is generally someone who has lost their job because of circumstances beyond their control and meets specific workforce program eligibility requirements.

You may qualify if:

  • You were laid off because your employer downsized or eliminated your position.

  • Your company permanently closed or announced that it will close.

  • You lost your job and are unlikely to return to your previous occupation or industry.

  • You were self-employed, but your business closed because of economic conditions or a natural disaster.

  • You are a qualifying displaced homemaker or military spouse experiencing employment disruption.

These are examples, not an exhaustive list. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and the applicable workforce program requirements.

You don't necessarily need to have been unemployed for months to qualify. Some individuals may be eligible shortly after losing their jobs.

Do I Need to Be Collecting Unemployment Benefits?

No. Receiving unemployment insurance benefits is not always required to qualify as a Dislocated Worker.

This is one of the most common misconceptions about workforce-funded training.

Depending on your circumstances, you may qualify even if:

  • You never applied for unemployment benefits.

  • You are no longer receiving unemployment benefits.

  • You recently lost your job and haven't received unemployment payments.

Workforce agencies review several factors when determining eligibility. Receiving unemployment benefits is one possible indicator, but it isn't the only way to establish eligibility.

Why Consider Truck Driving After a Layoff?

For individuals considering a career change, commercial truck driving offers an opportunity to develop a new occupational skill without necessarily committing to several years of college.

Professional drivers support industries such as transportation, construction, manufacturing, retail distribution, and logistics.

A Class A CDL can open doors to different types of driving careers, including:

  • Local and regional truck driving

  • Over-the-road transportation

  • Freight and distribution operations

  • Specialized transportation

  • Opportunities with established trucking companies

Employment opportunities, schedules, and compensation vary by employer, location, experience, and qualifications.

  • Career guidance and employment resources

We operate training locations in Downey, Torrance, and Lancaster, serving communities throughout Los Angeles County and the Antelope Valley.

Our goal is to help students develop the skills and confidence needed to begin a career in commercial transportation.

How Do I Find Out if I Qualify for Funded CDL Training?

If you've recently lost your job, the first step is to determine whether you may qualify for workforce training assistance. TGA offers an initial application process to help identify prospective students who may meet Dislocated Worker eligibility criteria.

After reviewing your information, our team can explain potential next steps, including connecting with the appropriate workforce agency for an official eligibility determination.

You may be asked to provide documentation regarding your employment history, job separation, identity, and other eligibility factors.

Submitting an application does not guarantee WIOA eligibility, funding, or enrollment.

Your Next Career Could Start Here

Losing a job can create uncertainty, but it can also provide an opportunity to explore a different career path.

If you've been laid off, experienced a company closure, or recently lost employment, don't assume that CDL training is financially out of reach.

You may qualify for assistance that helps cover the cost of training.
